Garden Structures
with Green Roofs & Walls
|
Garden structures with Green Roofs are now available from FineHouse as prefabricated building systems. Available in both freestanding and attached models, with and without trelliswork walls. The structures are available with pre-vegetated LiveRoof™ modules or ready for your growing medium and plant material. A range of options allow you to fit the structures to the site architecturally including column options, roof detailing, size and shape. The structures are made using sustainable lumber, recycled steel and fiberglass composites. |

The Rationale for Freestanding & Attached Garden Structures with Green Roofs & Walls
When a new or existing building is under consideration for the application of a green roof, numerous factors must be taken into consideration. (See: Building Envelope Design Guide - Roofing Systems by Tom Smith, AIA) In addition to the structural, roofing system, and green roof design issues, there are typically many other areas of concern; Access, utilities, bureaucracies, building codes, and more that must be addressed. When on the other hand, a structure that hosts a green roof, can be placed at ground level, at the perimeter of the building, many of the barriers and complexities to the installation of a green roof system are negated.
A second rationale for considering the freestanding or attached garden structures with green roofs are the concepts of passive solar cooling and daylighting. In view of the objectives of owners to improve the energy efficiency of buildings, extend the life of heating and cooling plant, and improve the comfort of occupants, we need to consider the recommendations of ASHRAE in their publication -Advanced Energy Design Guide for Small Retail Buildings, where the objective of reducing heat gain through the building envelope thus reducing internal cooling loads is realized when ASHRAE recommends: "Externally shade glazing to reduce solar gain and glare."

APPLICATIONS for GARDEN STRUCTURES with GREEN ROOFS
The concept of freestanding garden structures as the platforms for green roofs has many applications for both new sites under development & existing sites where a green roof retrofit can serve many purposes. Shelters for human habitation, utility enclosures and passive solar cooling are just a few examples. Green roofs help manage storm water runoff, provide additional CO2 /O2 exchange, reduce the "heat island" effect and in general, reduce our carbon footprint. |

HABITAT - Living Height |
UTILITY - Service height |
UTILITY - Design requirements defined |
| When using garden structures with green roofs for human habitation, pleasing aesthetic & psychological values might be realized in addition to the recognized ecological benefits. When used in conjunction with man's needed utility systems, ie. ( AC units, Transformers, Trash &Recycling bins), the garden structure with green roof becomes a valuable design option. |

SERVICE - Commercial, Attached |
SHADING - Attached |
SHADING - Freestanding |
| There are significant possibilities for the use of garden structures with green roofs for service operations ; restaurants, picnic shelters and parking structures are some that might be considered. When these structures are sited correctly, a considerable passive solar cooling benefit can be realized, particularly on east, west and south facing glazed areas of buildings. |

TERRACED - Combined elements to create terrace |
TIERS - Freestanding structures used in a tiered fashion |
| Garden structures with green roofs have considerable possibilities for site-specific applications, including; terracing, tiered and multiple freestanding"free-form" designs. |
