Frequently Asked Questions

Pergolas

Is it cheaper to build a pergola or buy one?

It's cheaper to buy a pile of lumber, and some hardware, than to buy something that is already fabricated. Add your labor, design, and possibly staining or painting, and the prices may come into closer alignment.

Do I need permission to build a pergola?

It depends on your local building & zoning departments as to whether you need a permit or not. Some jurisdictions do not require a permit if the structure is under a certain number of square feet, ie 250 sq ft.

How close to my neighbor's boundary can I build a pergola?

Generally you need to check with your local zoning department to determine what your "setback" is.

What is the best base for a pergola?

A pergola can be placed on any surface, the important factor is the need for a footing similar to what would be required for your house. If you build a pergola and bolt it to an existing concrete slab, it may not be strong enough to resist high winds.

Should pergola posts be set in concrete?

Typically yes, pier footings are recommended, usually to the depth of your regional frost line or recommended house footing depth.

What is the typical size of a residential pergola?

Sizes for pergolas vary widely but we see the 12x12 and 12x16 most often.

Can I grow plants on a pergola?

Most pergolas can have plants growing on them, with the exception of light weight aluminum structures having aggressive plants, like wisteria, growing on them. (it can deform a lightweight structure)

What are the main benefits of having a pergola in my garden?

Most people build pergolas for the aesthetic appeal. A pergola adds dimension and a visual quality that can not often be achieved in other ways.

What type of pergola lasts the longest?

We recommend building your pergola with Accoya with its 50 year warranty in outdoor use.

Can a pergola be attached to my house, or does it need to be freestanding?

Both freestanding and attached pergolas are fine. When attaching a pergola to a home it is important to understand the architectural significance as an attached structure could reduce the property value if not done correctly.

How do I ensure proper drainage when attaching a pergola to my home?

When attaching a pergola to the home any penetrations of the home's building envelope need to be properly flashed and sealed. It needs to be done professionally or with good detailed drawings and a diligent eye.

Are there different styles of pergolas available?

Pergolas can be either contemporary or traditional, but the most well designed pergolas follow the vernacular architecture of the existing home.

Can I install lighting or fans in my pavilion?

Yes, you can install lighting as well as fans in a pavilion, though they should be rated for protected outdoor use.

What kind of foundation is required for a pavilion?

A pavilion should have the same foundation as a house in the region you are building in.

Can pavilions be installed on sloped or uneven ground?

Pavilions should not be installed on sloped or uneven ground without leveling the area beneath so that the space beneath the pavilion can be used. This can be accomplished using retaining walls.

How do I maintain my pavilion?

Trellis

What is trellis?

Trellis is an architectural framework designed to support climbing plants while adding structure and visual interest to an outdoor space. It can be freestanding or attached to a wall, fence, or column system, serving both functional and decorative purposes.

Can trellis be structural?

Yes. While some trellises are purely decorative, others can be designed as structural elements. When integrated with steel framing or supported by properly engineered columns and footings, a trellis can provide long-term durability and reliable plant support.

Can trellis be attached to my home?

Yes. Trellises can be wall-mounted or integrated into an existing structure. Proper flashing, anchoring, and structural support are essential to ensure stability and prevent moisture intrusion.

Can a trellis be customized?

Yes. Trellises can be customized in size, configuration, and integration method to suit residential or commercial projects. Customization ensures proper scale, structural integrity, and alignment with the overall design.

Do I need a permit to install trellis?

In most cases, trellises do not require a permit, especially if they are non-structural and under a certain height. However, local building codes vary, so it’s always best to check with your municipality before starting your project.

How is trellis anchored?

Trellises can be anchored in several ways depending on the application. Common methods include surface mounting to concrete, embedding posts into footings, or attaching to an existing structure. Proper anchoring is critical for stability, especially in areas with wind exposure.

What types of plants work best on trellis?

Climbing plants such as jasmine, ivy, roses, clematis, and certain vines perform well on trellises. The specific plant selection should align with your climate, sunlight conditions, and maintenance preferences.

How much weight can trellis support?

Weight capacity depends on the design, material selection, and anchoring method. A properly engineered trellis can support mature climbing plants and seasonal growth without compromising stability.

Do trellises require maintenance?

Maintenance depends on the material and finish selected. Powder-coated steel components require minimal upkeep, while plant growth will require routine trimming and care.

Can trellis be used for privacy?

Yes. Trellises are often used to create partial privacy, especially when paired with dense climbing plants. While they don’t provide immediate full screening, they can become an effective natural barrier over time.

Can trellis be integrated with other outdoor structures?

Yes. Trellises are often incorporated into pergolas, pavilions, fences, and column systems to add vertical interest and support plant growth. Integration allows for a more cohesive and functional outdoor design.

What spacing is used in trellis designs?

Spacing depends on the intended use and plant type. Tighter spacing provides more support for smaller vines, while wider spacing can create a more open, architectural look.
